It
would take a tome to hold all of my favorite memories of GW days.
Athletically, being a part of the only team to have won a game
in the NCAA’s (baseball) would have to be high on my list
of proudest accomplishments. I was blessed to have some wonderful
teammates and coaches for my four years. Who could forget the
Bon Appetit? The 21st Amendment? Freshman year in Thurston Zoo?
And more importantly, can someone HELP me forget our food service
vendor, Mackey?
One of
my fondest memories is when fellow alum Al Pola and I used to
wander Crawford Hall on Wednesday afternoons doing our best attempt
at comedic improvisation. We must’ve done something right
– when the baseball season started back up and my days were
spoken for I received a lot of comments from Crawford residents
wondering where we were, especially since many were cutting classes
to be there! There’s too much to commit to paper but the
bottom line is I wouldn’t trade my time at GW for any school
in the nation!
I’ve had a wealth of experiences in the last twenty five
years since graduation. I’d like to think that I’ve
learned something from each one, and I hope I continue to learn
and grow in each year that follows! I’ve settled down in
South Florida, and I’m usually happy to be away from the
cold and the snow! Every once and a while, though, my mind will
take me back to DC, and I’ll have to smile (and cry a little)
as I relive the memories of 1977-1981. There’s a LOT I’d
do differently, and lot I’d do just the same – but
I’m grateful for the opportunities, education, athletics,
activities, friends and memories – that’s what The
George Washington University is!

Memories: Seeing history in the making...being present when Begin
and Sadat signed the Camp David Accord, experiencing the aftermath
of the Reagan assassination attempt, having Persian friends before
and after the fall of the Shah. Other favorite memories come from
being on the Swimming Team.
Activities:
After graduating for SEAS, I attended UVA School of Medicine where
I also completed my residency. Since then I have been working
with Veterans Health Administration and currently manage Geriatric
Programs in an 8-hospital network. I married Janie Newsome in
1986 and we live in Poquoson, Virginia with our 3 sons Bert (17),
Ben (15) and Britt (4).

After
completing a M.A. in Economics, I was a U.S. foreign service officer
for 10 years, and have been working in international telecom since
then. I have audited ten classes at GWU over the years, it was
fun to be back on campus and see all the changes. My 5-year old
daughter says she won't ever move away from home, she'll stay
with me and go to GWU too.

Memories: Managing to survive freshman year living in a Madison
Hall "six" (i.e. with 5 other roommates and hey, I managed
not to be in Thurston Hall); being invited to the White House
and dancing in the East Room; meeting the President; getting caught
on Capitol Hill between the pro and anti-Shah demonstrators; eating
a late night snack at Bon Appetite a #5; developing lifelong friendships
including my roommate of three GW class years, Scott Wollins,
(now deceased plaque erected in Scott’s honor in GW campus
park on F Street between 21st and 22nd Streets); playing in the
pep band for GW basketball games; playing tenor sax in the jazz
band; dating the fun ones and even the not so fun ones!

After
Graduating in 1981, I worked on Capitol Hill then moved to Boston
in 1983 to go to law school. After graduating in May of 1986,
I got married that summer, took the bar exam in the fall, and
then moved back down to DC at the end of 1986 when hired by the
Department of Labor. I have 3 children ages 15, 12 and 7.

“After
graduating on May, 3, 1981 I took a rather long vacation and started
full-time on Monday, May 4, 1981 at Ferris, Baker Watts, today
a 106-year old investment firm headquartered in Washington, DC.
Including my 18-month internship at FBW, I have spent over 26
years with my company, and manage approximately $363 million of
my clients' investment portfolios. I have been married for 20
years to Lori (Linwood) Ross, a GWU Columbian College 1984 grad,
live in Bethesda, Md., and we have two children, Jenna (14) and
Andrew (11). I have been very actively involved with GWU's business
school and its development efforts. I also have served on the
School of Business' Board of Advisors. It's particularly gratifying
to see how popular GWU has become, and how the University's rankings
have soared over the years. I look forward to welcoming you all
back to campus this fall!”
