14 GW Alumni Elected to Serve in 111th U.S. Congress
Newly Elected Sen. Mark Warner is one of
14 GW Alumni in the 111th U.S. Congress Election 2008 saw 14 fellow Colonials from across the country and across the political spectrum come out on top in their bid to serve in the 111th U.S. Congress.
The newest GW alumni in Congress are:
- U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), CCAS BA '77
- Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi (D-PR), LAW JD '84
Nine GW alumni incumbents won their bids for re-election:
- U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire (D-PA), SPHHS MHSA '98
- U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), CCAS BA '85
- U.S. Del. Donna Christensen (D-VI), SMHS MD '70
- U.S. Rep. John Duncan Jr. (R-TN), LAW JD '73
- U.S. Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY), GWSB BBA '66
- U.S. Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY), CCAS BA '81
- U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX), ESIA MS '74
- U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), SEAS BS '63
- U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL), LAW JD '85
Three GW Alumni in Congress were not up for re-election:
- U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND), GWSB MBA '75
- U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI), LAW JD '52
- U.S. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), LAW JD '64
One GW alumnus incumbent retired:
- U.S. Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-MN), LAW JD '73
One GW alumnus incumbent lost his seat:
- U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-FL), GWSB MBA '83
Libertarian Party presidential candidate and former Georgia congressman Bob Barr, ESIA MA '72, received 1% of the national vote.
