Volunteer with Undergraduate Admissions

The Office of Alumni Relations works closely with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to provide opportunities for alumni to assist in the admissions process. Alumni are the best ambassadors for the GW experience and your involvement with prospective and admitted students is extremely valuable.

Volunteers can help recruit students to apply to GW by participating in college fairs, attending local admitted student events to share your GW experience, or connecting with a local high school junior through the GW Book Award program.

Alumni volunteers who work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions help shape the future of GW. We hope you will join these efforts and continue to help GW Raise High!

Please note: volunteer opportunities are available in areas where Admissions is strategically recruiting prospective students, which may not always be in your geographic region.

Undergraduate Admissions Volunteer Opportunities

Admitted Student Events

Description: In the spring, Undergraduate Admissions transitions from trying to recruit prospective students to apply to encouraging those who applied and were admitted to attend GW. Regional admitted student events give prospective students the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the GW experience. Alumni volunteers can participate by potentially hosting the event or simply attending to welcome students, answer questions, and share their GW story. Read the full position description.

Time commitment: This opportunity will vary depending on the length of the event, but likely no more than once per academic semester.

Philanthropic commitment: All GW alumni volunteers are expected to participate in annual giving at GW by making a gift at a level of individual comfort.

Presenting the GW Book Award

Description: The GW Book Award recognizes high school juniors for their accomplishments in their school communities.  Alumni volunteers will present the award, either by physically presenting it at a local high school’s award ceremony, or by making a congratulatory phone call or writing/signing a congratulatory letter. Read the full position description.

Time commitment: This will depend on whether the award is given in person or virtually, but will only require an alumnus to commit their time once or twice in the spring for no more than an hour.

Philanthropic commitment: All GW alumni volunteers are expected to participate in annual giving at GW by making a gift at a level of individual comfort.

Represent GW at a College Fair

Description: Throughout the fall and spring semesters, GW Undergraduate Admissions staff members travel around the country to recruit prospective students (students who have not applied). One of our recruitment mechanisms is attending college fairs to meet large amounts of prospective students at one time. The alumni volunteer will stand at the college fair table with the Admissions representative and share his or her GW experiences as well as answer questions from prospective students and their families. Read the full position description.

Time commitment: This opportunity will vary depending on the length of the career fair and the volunteer's availability, but likely no more than once or twice per academic semester.

Philanthropic commitment: All GW alumni volunteers are expected to participate in annual giving at GW by making a gift at a level of individual comfort.

Speaking Opportunities

Description: Throughout the entire academic year, Undergraduate Admissions holds a variety of events for prospective and admitted students. These events are bolstered by speakers and panels, from which students can hear directly from current/former students about their GW experience. Alumni volunteers will be expected to speak honestly about their GW experiences to an audience of students and their families. Read the full position description.

Time commitment: This opportunity will most likely only require up to an hour of a volunteer’s time, and most likely not be asked of them more than once per academic semester.

Philanthropic commitment: All GW alumni volunteers are expected to participate in annual giving at GW by making a gift at a level of individual comfort.
